REI Co-op Trailmade Rain Jacket Review
The seams on the Trailmade leaked in real rain, so I replaced the jacket with one that has sealed seams.
The Trailmade weighed 15 ounces on my lists, and the jacket looked like a rain jacket until the rain arrived.
In February 2024 a close friend and I walked from Bear Valley over Mount Wittenberg to Coast Camp in Point Reyes, in the steady, committed rain the California coast turns out in February. The fabric of the Trailmade held. The seams did not, and about four miles in I was wet through. The yellow cover over my pack held up considerably better than the jacket did. The whole trip is in My Rain Jacket Failed at the Seams.
A rain jacket has one job, and a seam that lets water through fails that job. After that walk I bought a new jacket with sealed seams, and I stopped trusting a shell because of the fabric. Now I check whether anybody bothered to seal the seams before I check anything else.
What works
- A reasonable 15 ounces.
What does not
- The seams leaked in the rain.
